He woke up to the chirping of birds above him and wiped the sleep from his eyes. The moment he sat up, he knew something was different. There was a strange sensation in his side. Something was missing. He pressed his hand against it and felt the tender flesh sink at his touch. Were his fingers playing tricks on him? Or was a rib missing? God had put him to sleep yesterday and promised a surprise soon. This had come shortly after he’d told Him that he felt out of place with the animals. There was a gnawing emptiness in his soul he didn’t understand and now he’d woken up with a hole in his side. What was God up to?
He stood to his feet and basked in the warmth of the sunlight on his dark skin. There was something new in the air. The birds were chirping with much more glee than usual. Some baby chimpanzees scurried up to him, snickering to themselves.
“What are you laughing about?” he asked them. “What’s all the chatter going around?”
But they only paused for a second then hurried away, laughing again. He shrugged to himself. It didn’t matter. It was time to get back to work. There were more animals to name and the grapevines needed tending.
